The Perfect Gift

You Gotta Believe In Something

This Tibetan monk was sitting in a park and was moved to bless the deer that gathered ‘round him. Someone snapped a picture, and when they looked at it, a rainbow had appeared… never underestimate the magic and power of gratitude.

Lyrical Affair: Lee Ann Womack - I Hope You Dance

I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty-handed

I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances but they're worth taking
Lovin' might be a mistake but it's worth making

Don't let some hell-bent heart leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out reconsider
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance

This Pic Though...

When letting hope slip away is not an option, all a homeless man can do is pray.

She Said: Liz Gilbert /Julia Roberts

"I've come to believe in something I call "The Physics of the Quest." A force in nature governed by laws as real as the laws of gravity. The rule of Quest Physics goes something like this: If you're brave enough to leave behind everything familiar and comforting, which can be anything from your house to bitter, old resentments, and set out on a truth-seeking journey, either externally or internally, and if you are truly willing to regard everything that happens to you on that journey as a clue and if you accept everyone you meet along the way as a teacher and if you are prepared, most of all, to face and forgive some very difficult realities about yourself, then the truth will not be withheld from you"

an extract from one of my favorite movie, Eat Pray Love.

translation: Lucky Women

Italy is both the fashion and cobblestone capital of the world and if you’ve ever been to Rome, you’ll know how fantastically chic all the women dress. Rome recently decided that their women are suffering way too much because of the uneven streets, especially since most women wear stilettos daily. That is why mayor Gianni Alemanno recently announced the decision to repave the streets – priorities, priorities! Luckily, history will be preserved, since the streets will still retain their rustic cobblestones , but in a new base of concrete, so that the level is even. No Jimmy Choos will be sacrificed anymore! Bliss.

Love Looks Something Like This

How beautiful?

Art

I stumbled across this awesome work of art on THR. This is a painting Alec Monopoly painted on top of piano notes for the Lionel Richie song 'All Night Long'. That's the kind of vibe I'm down for. If I had $30,000 in my back pocket, I would have purchased it too. No doubt. ONLY If I had the money in my back pocket.

"The combination of mischief and humor in Alec's work has always appealed to me. His iconic characters and relentless postings on the streets of N.Y. and L.A. have brought a smile to my face many times. Even as I ventured to the Middle East and came across advertisements for a construction company with the same name (ALEC), I couldn't help but be reminded of his work." Adrien Brody

She Said: Angela Ahrendts Burberry CEO

“I don’t look at Gucci or Chanel or anyone...If I look to any company as a model, it’s Apple. They’re a brilliant design company working to create a lifestyle, and that’s the way I see us,”

This article (via WSJ) was sent to me by a friend who understands my passion for Fashion, Tahl.

She Said: Teri Thompson

“It often takes many years to really understand one’s strengths and where one finds happiness. In a sense, I do think it’s unrealistic to assume a long sought-after job can bring one such happiness that one’s searching is done. We’re all a work in progress; new inputs—from new friends to new places visited—mean we’re constantly changing in our thoughts of what’s desired, what’s possible, what’s fun, what we want to do.”

I only stumbled across this awesome music today. I think this could be my lucky day. I try to at least find new music every single day. At least 10 new artists. And then from there I check their other work with other artists. Just for credibility's sake. No one hit wonders here.

Wordsmith: Fela Anikulapo Kuti

“Music is a spiritual thing. You don’t play with music.

You play with music you will die young.

See, because when the higher forces give you gift of music…musicianship, it must be well used for the good of humanity. If you use it for your own self by deceiving the people, you will die young.”

This quote from Fela is the inspiration for my ‘Music is the Weapon’ series of mixtapes. Fela Kuti was one of the original revolutionary musicians that understood the power of music to create social change.

Damn This Weather Man...

I'm so tired
So over work
I would rather be in bed
Cuddling the hell out of someone's child
With a few smooches all over.

Wait, have you seen the weather outside?!

Shady Business!

If there's anything you need to know about me is that I am in love with sunglasses. I collect them everywhere I go. I have 30 something pairs ranging from R2000 D&G's to R20 from Newtown flea markets. There's just so much character in picking the right pair. I've found my magic and it's nowhere around the oval or round shapes. Nope, not my style. My face is too long for such a shape. Picking the right shape to suit your face is vital since you won't look like a camel each time you change your hair.

Christmas Wishlist: Steve Stoute - The Tanning of America

I am a huge Steve Stoute fan and I need to make sure I get my hands on this book. Below are the 15 reasons to read 'The Tanning of America':

1. Find out what Academy Award-nominated filmmaker made a video for Grandmaster Melle Mel’s “White Lines” on spec that Sugar Hill Records founder, Sylvia Robinson, declined to use.

2. Learn who Stoute calls the Norman Rockwell of popular music.

3. Read about why LL Cool J was terrified after making “Going Back to Cali.”

4. Get the real story behind how Interscope Geffen Chairman, Jimmy Iovine, got “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang” on the radio when they initially refused to play it.

5. Wouldn’t you like to know why Stoute feels African-Americans are the best consumers in the world?

6. Discover the New York borough Tommy Hilfiger would drive through on his way home everyday to get fashion inspiration.

7. You’ll see the genius way Cyndi Lauper used the WWE to break her hit song, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”

8. Aren’t you curious to know the reason Kanye West told Steve he knew that “Jesus Walks” would have no trouble getting spins?

9. You won’t believe which R&B singer refused to be in Will Smith’s “Men In Black” music video because she felt it’d hurt her credibility.

10. Learn how Reebok brass reacted when Stoute first recommended using Jadakiss for the Allen Iverson A5 sneaker commercial.

11. Want to know the biggest roadblock in getting Jay-Z to agree to do a deal with Reebok?

12. Understand from Steve’s perspective why the Sony Walkmen MP3 player was failure despite being an excellent MP3 player.

13. Get an insider account of the highly successful Sean John “Unforgivable” cologne launch.

14. In case you’re curious about which celebrities Hewlett Packard originally wanted to use for their “PC Is Personal” campaign, it’s in the book.

Art As A Weapon - Jeff Durkin

I am an art disciple at heart even though I might not show it half the time. I look at art as the one gift the world gave to us. Any form of art, from anywhere around the world. However big or small. From hanging in galleries to the street alleys. Art is a broad word and I always prefer not to try and explain what it really is to me because that on its own will be boxing it. It's too broad for words.

I stumbled across this piece (Art As A Weapon) on Life+Times and it grabbed me instantly. It's a documentary on street art, Buddhism and a struggle for democracy. I won't get too much into it, you can go watch it and hopefully let it move you like it did me. Below are the two 'quotes' that stood out for me from this 4:11 minutes doccie.

"You have to ask yourself what it is that you are fighting for and if what you think you're fighting for is worth it then you should never get discouraged. The reason why we want democracy in Burma, is because we want our people to take responsibility for their own destinies. In the end...we shall prevail."

"Freedom of speech is predicated on the idea that you might not like everything everyone says, but it's important that they have the right to say what you want to say. I think Street Art functions the same way."

P.S. Applause to Director Jeff Durkin for this amazing project. Such hope for peace and equality.

Inspiration

Your life is your life
don't let it be clubbed into dank submission
be on the watch.
there are ways out.
there is a light somewhere.
it may not be much light but it beats the darkness
be on the watch.
the gods will offer you chances.
know them.
take them.
you can't beat death but you can beat death in life, sometimes.
and the more often you learn to do it,
the more light there will be.
your life is your life.
know it while you have it.
you are marvelous
the gods await to delight in you

Charles Bukowski
